VShef Mathieu Palombino has opened his latest pizza and Italian food business, Gigi and Mario, in Edgewater. The restaurant serves lovingly prepared pizzas and other Italian delights. With a homemade menu and a Neapolitan Acunto brick oven for making pizzas, there is something for everyone.
The 1,300 square foot Gigi and Mario features an open pizza station surrounded by large, comfortable cabins. According to chef Mathieu, “the warm colors and natural wood create a warm and relaxed atmosphere” inside. Meanwhile, there’s an outdoor cafe on the sidewalk; with seasonal seating offering views of the Hudson River and New York skyline. “It’s a great place to stop for a cappuccino and dessert after shopping; even if you don’t stay for a pizza,” he adds.

Gigi and Mario offers an Italian-American menu with a range of options. “I’m an old-school European chef and I do things the way I always have,” says Chef Mathieu. “Everything is handmade from scratch. We grate balls of parmesan and pecorino, we scale the clams by hand; our desserts are handmade by a pastry chef, we make dressings from premium oils and vinegars.”
Of course, Gigi and Mario’s main attraction is his big 16-inch shareable pizza. Luckily for Chef Mathieu, the previous company left behind its artisanal Neapolitan Acunto brick oven. In fact, “that’s what caught my eye here,” admits chef Mathieu. “This is the oven I use in all my pizzerias.” Click here to see the full menu.
Their pizza uses mature dough made from a blend of American flours; as well as a base of Californian tomatoes and local fresh mozzarella. Specialty pies include the spicy sopressata and, Chef Mathieu’s favourite, the Pugliese pizza; a burrata base with broccoli, mild Italian sausage and fresh chili peppers. “My father is from Puglia and that is close to my heart,” he says. Gigi and Mario also offer custom pies, where customers choose a red or white base in addition to fresh fillings.
Italian classics and American favorites
Other Italian and American dishes on the menu include calamari, grilled artichokes and grilled octopus. The ball of breaded and fried burrata served on a marinara sauce with parmesan shavings, for example, is a current success. Similarly, Gigi and Mario make a cheeseburger topped with smoked bacon, caramelized onions, Russian dressing, salsa verde, and cheddar cheese.
Meanwhile, the dessert menu features Italian classics like cheesecake, lemon torta or Belgian chocolate fondue for the table; the latter is also accompanied by fresh fruit and ricotta fritters.
Gigi and Mario also plan to serve an all-American weekend brunch soon. This brunch will include French toast, waffles, pancakes, toasted sandwiches, large breakfast plates and burgers; plus toppings such as bananas, pecans, and bacon.
About Chef Mathieu
Originally from Belgium, Chef Mathieu received training in his home country in the classic French style. Despite this, he has an affinity for creating Italian cuisine with his personal touch. In particular, he enjoys making pizzas using a Neapolitan Acunto brick oven. (“The best pizza oven in the world.”) Besides Gigi and Mario, chef Mathieu is also the founder of Motorino; a pizzeria starting in Brooklyn that now has outposts in Hong Kong, Dubai and beyond.
