Fascist Giorgia Meloni, who will become Italy’s first female prime minister after the September 25 elections, shared a video of a migrant raping a woman on social media.

When criticized by other political parties, Meloni said, “The security of our cities is out of control in part because of the surreal migration policies you have pursued in recent years.” His Italian Brothers’ Day stands on a vocal anti-immigration platform, opposing cash handouts to the unemployed and urging arms shipments to Ukraine.

He claims that migration is driven by big business to drive down wages. Meloni said Italy lets in “hundreds of thousands of people to sell drugs, controlled by organized crime, or to prostitute themselves.”

Brothers of Italy reaped the benefit of staying in opposition after a string of recent governments collapsed after overseeing austerity. He will likely lead a hard-right coalition comprising Matteo Salvini’s League party and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.

The right-wing coalition is on track to win 46% of the vote. Meloni and his allies have agreed that the party that wins the most votes will choose the next prime minister. The party campaigns on the slogan “God, Fatherland, Family”.

He regularly insists that one of the main objectives of the government should be to drive up birth rates in order to avoid “the extinction of the Italians”.

Meloni is proud of the flame in her party’s logo. It evokes the roots of the Italian Brothers in the MSI party, founded after the war by followers of dictator Benito Mussoliniwhich used the same image.

Meloni praises Mussolini. “Everything he did, he did for Italy – and there haven’t been politicians like him for 50 years,” she said. Party officials have an apparent leaning towards fascism.

Francesco Acquaroli, the governor of the Marche region, attended a 2019 dinner with party mayors honoring Mussolini’s takeover. When Meloni posted a video last month insisting her party had renounced fascism, she spoke in English, French and Spanish, but not Italian.

Berlusconi is running for the Senate for the first time since he was banned in 2013 for tax evasion. Forza Italia is the weakest of the three parties and recently split.

Matteo Salvini’s League is a natural partner for Meloni. As interior minister, he closed migrant camps and prevented boats carrying migrants from entering ports. His party also campaigns on a racist platform.

The 5-star party won the 2018 elections with almost a third of the vote and still polls at 11%. He is not currently part of any alliance.

5 Star began by sharing power with the far-right League, then moved to the Democratic Party before eventually becoming part of the national government. It also split when the government fell.

All the major parties, with the exception of the Brothers of Italy, were part of the last government. It has discredited them all left and right. Center and left parties have repeatedly suffered for not implementing budget cuts while in government.

The parliamentary left is frantically lamenting that after failing to make workers pay more for the past decade, a banker imposed at the head of a government also failed. They opened a door on the far right to fill a void.

Italy is the intended recipient of 200 billion euros (£174 billion) of coronavirus recovery funds from the European Union (EU). Previous EU bailout money hinges on cuts. It should be noted that Meloni and indeed the rest of the right have muted their criticism of the EU.

This is also partly why the Brotherhood supports Ukraine, even though the hard right in Italy is generally pro-Putin. Salvini, for example, still is.

The biggest threat from the new government will be migrants. He will take action, not these elections, to stop them.
