One of the most iconic restaurants in Las Vegas has to be Piero’s Italian Cuisine. This classic Italian restaurant sits squarely in the echelon of the Golden Steer and Peppermill, lending an old-school Vegas feel while maintaining high standards and a long list of clientele of Las Vegas movers and shakers, as well as celebrities, locals and conventioneers. Piero’s is a family business, and father-son team Freddie and Evan Glusman are well known in the Valley.
There are plenty of lovely features that get your night off to a good start, and one is valet parking (it’s mandatory, no self-parking allowed). But it’s also close enough to the Strip that you can park at properties like Resorts World Las Vegas and The Venetian and walk there. Piero’s has occupied its current location on Convention Center Drive since 1982 and is very much like a tiny house. Inside, this little house can accommodate more than 300 guests in six dining rooms.
A favorite spot here is around the lively bar, where classic cocktails, like a huge Gibson or an espresso martini, get the Piero twist. Order that cocktail “up” and you’re sure to taste the spirits in the generous pour (signal that sigh of satisfaction) as you gaze at custom portraits adorning the walls.
Piero’s has all the best Italian appetizers, from a creamy burrata, with heirloom tomatoes, balsamic vinegar and pesto, to Pat’s meatballs, served with whipped ricotta. If you prefer carpaccio or charcuterie, you can have that too, and shrimp cocktail is always a fun way to go.
There are plenty of pasta dishes, including linguine and clams in white wine and garlic; rigatoni in Sunday sauce with meatballs, sausage and ricotta; and baked ziti with homemade Italian sausage. For a substantial entree, if you’re lucky, osso buco will be on special, but you can get New York steak, filet mignon, and a huge veal chop anytime. Recently, a bone-in rib-eye was on the specialty menu, and if you find it, it’s a good specimen of meat. Plus, salmon and sea bass give you lighter options.
The eggplant Parmigiana is one of my favorites, and the huge platter of tender slices baked in cheese and pomodoro and mozzarella gives you a lot to take away. (Thank goodness, or I might need to eat here every week!) And there’s a good range of sides, from baby portobellos to potatoes whipped in silky olive oil.
The dessert choices presented to you will certainly be tempting. Order an ice cream or sorbet if you want to go lighter, but the tiramisu and cannoli are two safe bets. And thank your lucky stars if you get the Paris Brest, a puff pastry filled with cream, perfect to end any evening.
