Buon Appetito, Bergen County! River Edge’s new Sonny T Restaurant and Bar serves Southern Italian cuisine featuring family recipes and classics. Those who remember Rugova Italian restaurant will know where to find this 2,200 square foot spot; although they don’t recognize the refurbished interior which now features a modern, upscale design.
Sonny T can seat 120 people indoors, while their outdoor dining area can seat 50. They also have a large permanent outdoor dining tent coming up, owner Dominque Teta said. “Since opening, we’ve had a great response and lots of positive feedback,” he told Best of NJ.
Teta also explains that the owners are native Sicilians from Hackensack. “We saw the historic potential of the restaurant,” he says. With that in mind, they hired seasoned general manager Theresa Wickersheim and a kitchen team who had worked at Felidia; one of the best Italian restaurants in New York.

Sonny T serves up a taste of southern Italy
A popular meal starter is the Sonny T Chopped Salad; which includes artichoke hearts, tomatoes, onions, pepperoncini and mozzarella pearls in a lemon garlic vinaigrette. Then Sunday dinner Sonny T offers nanny sauce with sausage, meatballs and braciola, with spaghetti or rigatoni. For pizza lovers, the Signature Margarita pie comes with fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce and basil.
Meanwhile, gluten-free lovers can order a gluten-free crust pie. But keep in mind that the kitchen cannot guarantee the absence of cross-contamination with other products. Plus, vegetarian options include pizza and salads, and they can always accommodate special requests. They don’t have a specific menu for kids, but Sonny T offers kid-friendly pizza and pasta dishes.
